This past Thursday, Paramus Rotary welcomed back author Patrice McDonough, who discussed her newest Victorian‑era mystery, Murder by Moonrise. The novel follows Scotland Yard’s first female medical examiner, Dr. Julia Lewis, whose holiday is interrupted when a murderer infiltrates the royal family’s summer retreat. Patrice also highlighted the 1800s guilds and trade associations that served as early predecessors to Rotary International, along with a quirky loophole in England’s medical‑licensing laws that briefly allowed both her fictional Dr. Lewis and the first real female physicians to practice medicine before it was quickly closed. A former educator who taught history for more than three decades, Patrice is a member of the Historical Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, and the Historical Novel Society. At our recent Paramus Rotary meeting, we were joined by Seraphim Woods, Past President of Spring Valley Rotary, who introduced us to the Rotary Means Business fellowship. The Rockland County chapter emphasizes reconnecting Rotary with its original purpose of fostering professional relationships among members. Their fellowship provides structured opportunities for Rotarians to learn about one another’s businesses, exchange referrals, and build ethical, Four‑Way‑Test–driven professional connections. Through regular networking events hosted at members’ workplaces and community locations, Rotary Means Business strengthens collaboration across clubs and encourages Rotarians to support each other both personally and professionally.
