RADIAN EDITION - May 16, 2019

Hello Friends,

We finally saw some sunshine after all that rain.  But remember, you can't have a rainbow without a little rain.

     Ask yourself these questions...
1)  Have I done my part in the upcoming Golf Outing on 5/21 by means of sponsoring a hole, getting a gift donated, golfing or volunteering?
2)  Have you registered for Relay for Life yet?  June 14-15 - www.relayforlife.org   Sign up under "Paramus Noon Rotary".
3)  How many raffle tickets have you sold for the June 21st Cash Raffle?
4)  Did you RSVP for the Installation dinner yet?
5)  Do I need to step up my "volunteering game"?

President Diane was at the District Conference last week.  Even in her absence, she thought of all her fellow Rotarians for Mother's Day.  Thank you from the 26 Rotarians in attendance for supplying the beautiful roses for our loved ones.
Hope you have an exceptional day.

Dawn Feorenzo, Secretary
Ki, our very emotional Gift of Life Child, thanking the Rotarians for helping him get 2 mechanical valves for his heart.
Ki is 25 years of age and is the sole bread winner for his family back in his country.  Having this surgery was lifesaving for him.
$350 Happy Dollars was collected and given to Ki to help him get back home.  Safe travels Ki!

Detective Jason Hofstra and Detective "Frank" did an excellent job explaining the Opioid Epidemic in Bergen County.  With the many different avenues of narcotics, it has affected all walks of life.  This presentation is usually given to 7th, 8th and H.S. students since they are the most exposed.  The most common paths to dependance is 1) Legitimate Injury {doctor visit + prescribed opioids + injury heals but pills continue} or 2) Experimentation {parties, friends, family, boyfriend/girlfriend}.  Both paths could lead to ADDICTION.
Transistion to heroin begins 1) When the pills run out because the doctor will no longer fill out the prescription for opioids or illegal opioids become too expensive ($40/pill)  2) Withdrawal makes people extremely desperate  3) Heroin becomes a readily available substitute at $2/bag.

2016-2017 Overdose Stats
824 Total Overdoses
228 Overdose fatalities
82% Approx. heroin/opioid related
Majority of victims between 18-31 years old
All socioeconomic and education levels

Over 600,000 deaths since 1999
Up to 65,000 deaths in 2016 alone

They shared a touching video of NBA star, Chris Herren's story.  Please take 5 minutes to watch NOTE TO SELF
