Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday April 8, 2021

Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday, April 8, 2021

Our guest speaker for April 8, 2021, was Dr. Lois Lee, founder and president of Children of the Night (COTN).
COTN is a private non-profit organization that has rescued over 11,000 children from child prostitution since its founding in 1979.

Dr. Lois Lee is the world’s leading expert in rescuing child sex trafficking victims.  She holds a PhD in Sociology and Anthropology, a Juris Doctor in Law, and is an active member of the California State Bar.

Dr. Lee's presentation chronicled her career in this field, from its inception to the present day.

The 1985 TV movie, Children of the Night, is a fact-based drama about a sociology graduate (Dr. Lee, played by Karen Quinlan) who starts to work with teen prostitutes in Hollywood in 1973. The film does not draw back on its depiction of the brutality that the teens face nor of the exploitation that occurs from the pimps and johns who use them. Pat Benatar's song "Hell Is For Children" is used to set the film's theme. The result of Dr. Lee's graduate work is her paper, “The Pimp and His Game,” which is the basis of her trainings of thousands of members of law enforcement and her expert testimony in state and federal courts since the 80’s.

Dr. Lee explained that many sex trafficked children believe that life as a prostitute is preferable to living in an abusive home environment. Sadly, these individuals fall victim to their pimp's false promises of marriage and a happy family life at the end of a short, but necessary (for the pimp), tenure as a prostitute.  As Dr. Lee noted, child prostitution can be considered a crime of the heart -- broken hearts.

Currently, Dr. Lee is focused on creating a Board of Directors to continue COTN's work well into the future.  She has also created an initiative to expand COTN's presence in the New York City area via billboards and bus stop advertisements (shown above) that will provide an outlet for sex trafficked individuals to seek safe haven from their pimps and johns.

If you would like to contact Dr. Lee personally, she can be reached at (818) 908-4474, or at lois@childrenofthenight.org.

~ Our guest speakers for the April 15, 2021, meeting will be Nart Assad and his sons, The Science Boys.

The Four Science Boys and their engineer father, Nart Asaad, have been working from their basement-based robotics workshop in Wayne, NJ, for the past year, applying their knowledge in science, engineering, and robotics to create a UVC sanitation system prototype to be used -- free of charge -- in public spaces in their community. This innovative system will help save lives by lowering the infection risk of COVID-19 in these locales.

The Science Boys, brothers Adam - 1st Grade; Rayan - 6th Grade; Baslan - 9th Grade; and Mohammad 10th Grade, will share their vision with us, how and why they embarked on this project, and their planned next steps. ~
