Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday October 14, 2021
No description available.

Jack Terhune, a former Bergen County sheriff and state corrections commissioner.

Jack is the President of the 200 Club. He joined the Paramus Rotary Club’s meeting on October 14th, 2021. He spoke to us about Club 200’s mission, action program, and it’s financial impact on our community.
The 200 Club of Bergen County is a tax-exempt public charity, their mission is to enrich our community by supporting the families of law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel in the event of their death or injury. They ensure their future by providing scholarships and assistance to agencies that protect us.

Thirty-Five Years Strong
Over 35 years ago, a Detroit businessman elicited generous responses when he asked 100 business friends to contribute $200 each to the family of a young police officer who was fatally wounded in the line of duty. This was the origin of the 200 Club.
Each 200 Club in the United States is independent of the other. In the early 1980s, former N.J. State Police Superintendent Colonel Clinton Pagano made several attempts to start a 200 Club in Bergen County, all of which failed – until he introduced the idea to J. Fletcher Creamer Sr.
Mr. Fletcher Creamer Sr., an influential businessman renowned for his involvement in civic affairs, took the lead and personally signed up the first 80 members in 1985.

The 200 Club of Bergen County now stands as one of the largest 200 Clubs with over 1200 members and growing. While the 200 Club of Bergen County’s members are its lifeblood, the organization’s past and current presidents, executive board members and trustees volunteer a great deal of time and effort to ensure that the club remains true to its mission.
They continually work to improve upon the support that the club provides to our police, fire and emergency service personnel throughout the county of Bergen. From founder J. Fletcher Creamer Sr. all the way through to the current president, Jack Terhune and the present Board of Trustees, they continue to make significant contributions to the advancement of the 200 Club of Bergen County.

Anyone interested in furthering the aims and goals of The 200 Club and supporting the Bergen County Police, Fire, and EMS community is eligible for membership. Your annual dues of $250.00 run on a calendar year and you may pay online via a credit card.
As a new member, you will receive a 200 Club membership card, car decal, and membership plaque (at no additional cost but you must inform us if you want the plaque). You will also receive all notifications regarding events and announcements via email.

Applying for membership in The 200 Club of Bergen County is because you share the Club’s beliefs in the value of supporting Police, Fire and EMS personnel. Our membership upholds the highest standards of citizenship consistent with the Club’s mission. Membership is conditional and may be revoked by the Board of Trustees for improper use.
This is your opportunity to give a little for those who give it all. Your membership will help fund the continued support of our First Responders and their families. The 200 Club is an iconic organization in both Bergen County and the State of New Jersey, and by becoming a member and displaying your decal with pride, you can boldly voice your support for those who put their lives on the line for you.

Within the history of any organization comes a defining moment when it is tested and success or failure is on the line.
Back when it all started for them, several objectives were established within the mission of the 200 Club of Bergen County; being able to support the family of a 1st Responder fallen hero, was first and foremost.
On July 1, 1988, at 3 PM a fire started at a local Hackensack auto dealership. As the fire intensified within the building, the ceiling collapsed killing five Hackensack firefighters. The Fallen Firefighters Fund was quickly created in the wake of this tragedy and the 200 Club was able to raise more than $75,000.
One of the firefighters killed that day was William Kresja. His wife, Clara became an “Honorary Trustee” and has remained so for more than 30 years. Clara’s dedication to the 200 Club remains strong in support of their mission to continue to honor and support those that have given the ultimate sacrifice.
Since the 1988 Hackensack Fire and then September 11, 2001, the 200 Club has awarded more than $500,000 in Death Benefits and other financial support to fallen and severely injured public servants.
The Impact: Millions Of Dollars In Financial Support

Since its creation in 1985, the 200 Club has continually worked on increasing and improving the support they provide to our police, fire and emergency service personnel.
In addition to the millions of dollars in financial support they have provided through their continuous ActionAppropriation and Scholarship programs, the one time 9/11 WTC Fund raised more than $300,000 for Bergen County public servants affected by September 11th.

Additionally, the 200 Club has also played a vital role in the creation of two memorials located at the Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah: The Wall of Heroes Memorial and The 9/11 Memorial.

The Center for Hope & Safety offers a safe refuge and support to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. their programs and services inform survivors of their options and support them in their choices. A cornerstone of their philosophy is respect for the rights of all survivors, including the freedom to decide whether to report to the police the crimes committed against them. They work with survivors of any race, color, creed, religious belief, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

The Paramus Rotary Club has supported them for decades. And during the midst of the Pandemic, Paramus Rotary Club donated to the Center of Hope and Safety. 4 SUV’s full of food and supplies to fill many of the center’s needs. Please read the article below and be PROUD!!

Keep up the good work with Rotary Club of Paramus Trex Bag Recycling Challenge
We are close to 200 pounds!!
We need to meet and surpass our goal of 500 LBS of plastic for this year. Madame President Dawn Feorenzo would like to have two benches to donate.

The Trex Company has hosted the Recycling Challenge since 2006, with the objective of educating public on the importance of plastic film recycling through school and community recycling programs. Participants collect plastic bags and film with the goal of collecting or exceeding 500 pounds of plastic in a 6-month period. If the goal is met the group is awarded an earth-friendly Trex bench, created from recycled plastic bags and film. This is an ongoing program, and benches are donated to local schools, libraries and public county areas.

SPOT LIGHT TO DISTRICT's NEWS AND NOTES

The deadline to take advantage of the District's offer to pay for two new members has been extended to October 30. Once again, clubs are encouraged to nominate family members (siblings, spouses, adult children) of Board members or other active members.

Spaces are selling fast for our Rotary District 7490 Conference to be held May 19-22 at the beautiful TRS Resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. Co-Conference Chairs PDG Joe Laureni and PDG Joe Dino have arranged for us to get really great rates for this luxury resort.  For those with children, there is a special resort area right across the street! When you reserve, please e-mail a photo of your passport plus a photo of your COVID vaccination card to PDG Joseph Dino at josephdinojr@optonline.net, along with the brochure if using a check.  If you would like insurance for the trip, please call Ruby's Travel in Wayne at 973-696-782. Reserve your airfare as early as possible. Ruby's Travel recommended Jet Blue as the best way to go, but of course, this is up to you. You can purchase insurance through Ruby's Travel through October 30. Even if you have already e-mailed your information, PDG Joe Dino prefers that you fill out the form on the back of the attached brochure and send it to DG John or bring it with you to the next District Staff meeting. Don't miss out!  Register now!

Rotary Leadership Institute is returning this Fall.  You can attend most RLI sessions this year virtually at any level (including this year's Graduate Course on the Rotary Foundation's 7 Areas of Focus) with the first session taking place virtually this Saturday, September 25th and then on October 16.  If you prefer a course in-person, you can go to Scranton, PA on October 16). We will be holding a session especially for our District and our neighboring District 7475 on April 9 (changed from April 2) but you can attend all sessions. Register at www.rlinea.org   The District will pay for all attendees at Level I, and there is a Buy One Get One offer at all of the other levels -- if the club sends two people, then the District will reimburse the club for the money they laid out. We ask that interested participants register and pay first themselves, then send the certificate of completion to the District for reimbursement.  When you register for RLI the first time, please register as a guest, since RLI uses a different data base than we use here.  If you have already attended an RLI course in the past, you should be in the system.

See you on 10/21/21
