Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday, July 6, 2017 We had two GREAT presentations that took place on Thursday July 6, 2017. During the first presentation, the Paramus Public Library honored everyone who worked diligently to beautify the Peace Garden and the Paramus Library grounds. As part of a long standing tradition, they honored individuals that work collectively to complete this project! The first book, "The Forever Garden," was given to Bill Comery to recognize him for all of the outdoor projects. The second book, "Bloom," was given to Ken Raschen. Lisa Vartanian was recognized for providing all the student volunteers with a book titled "A Place to Read." Our Past President Nick Laganella II was recognized with the book "Life." Last, but certainly not least, our Rotary Club was recognized with the book "I Dreamt," which is a book about hope. This was followed but a short presentation of pictures of all the updates that were completed as part of this project! Our Vice President, Fred Rohdieck, introduced our Guest speaker, Gordon Geiger, who came to talk to us from the GOVERNMENT in order to help us! He started his presentation with a talk about his life and how he started out as a farmer with his father during the Depression. The family worked on farms in Paramus that were well known for the production of celery! After working working many jobs he loved throughout his life, he was forced to retire after getting sick. He now spends his time after his Rotary Meetings on Wednesday's reading books to kids! And... This is also when working for the Government started! The Selective Service is a two-part mission; The first part is to provide manpower to the armed forces in an emergency and secondly to run an Alternative Service Program for men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft. Selective Service would provide manpower to the military by conducting a draft using a list of young men's names gathered through the Selective Service registration process. Virtually all men - ages 18 through 25 - must register. Only if there is high compliance with this law, will a future draft be fair and equitable. The obligation of a man to register is imposed by the Military Service Act, which establishes and governs the operations of the Selective Service System. Even though we do not have an active draft at this time, the Selective Service is always active! They are always looking for more volunteers to help out with their services. Gordon is from the Passaic chapter and at this time it is fully staffed with volunteers but he is here to educate us about the program and let us know that the Bergen chapter is short and is looking for help! The following is a link to the Registration page should anyone like to register! ************* |
