Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday, January, 7, 2021 The first meeting of the year was a general, round table style meeting held in-person and via ZOOM. The meeting provided members with the opportunity to discuss events occurring during the recent holiday break. Past President Diane Vasile-Falcone announced that club members donated $975 for the Angels Among Us project, providing $25 gift cards to financially-challenged families to purchase gifts for their children/family members during the holiday season. What a wonderful example of the Rotary Spirit of Service Above Self! ************ Weekly Announcements! Our guest speaker via Zoom for January 14, 2021, will be Dr. Amra Sabic-El-Rayess. A professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, Dr. Sabic-El-Rayess’ presentation will focus on her recent book THE CAT I NEVER NAMED: A True Story of Love War and Survival. The book examines how ultraconservative groups leverage education, both informal and formal, to instigate changes in social norms, values, and behaviors. Dr. Sabic-El Rayess grew up in Bihac, Bosnia and Herzegovina. After surviving ethnic cleansing and more than 1,100 days under the Serbs’ military siege, she emigrated to the United States in 1996. By December 1999, she earned a BA in Economics from Brown University. Later, she obtained two Masters degrees and a Doctorate from Columbia University.
