Vice President Jean Jadevaia is a little festive for the meeting.  Happy Halloween.  She is getting ready to present our guest speaker

Our guest Speaker - New Jersey Rotarian Forrest Elliott, District's Co-Secretary
A member of the Secaucus Rotary Club.

Elliott, a retired teacher who lives in Wood-Ridge with his wife, Diane, spends much of his time these days trying to pass on some measure of comfort to the aging veterans of our wars and to the homeless souls who sleep under our bridges. On Planet Earth, we have Forrest Elliott who is racing to take care of people in need. A wise person said that you can measure the richness of your character and depth of your soul by asking three questions: How do you spend your free time? What are your idle thoughts? How do you spend your excess money?
Elliott devotes his time, money and thoughts to people in need.

Elliott collects T-shirts, socks and sneakers for the elderly soldiers who are spending their last days at the state Veterans Home in Paramus. An American Legion Post in Little Ferry raised $600 to help cover the cost of some of the T-shirts, socks and sneakers. Another American Legion Post in Lodi filled several plastic bins with T-shirts and socks that members purchased on their own. Meanwhile, Elliott collected enough money to buy more than 100 pairs of white, Fila sneakers at $15 a pair, and in a variety of sizes.

In addition to assembling the clothing for the veterans, Elliott also managed to collect five dozen cases of water that he gave to area homeless shelters during the summer heat waves. In winter, Elliott collect coats for the homeless. Elliott’s modest volunteer work here will never make the record books. His are the small deeds that improve life in a small corner of the world.
Elliott never served in the military. He tries to help veterans as a way of remembering his now-deceased father, a Marine who fought his way across the Pacific during World War II. As for the homeless, Elliott just opened his eyes. He saw a need and decided to do something. He is just one of tens of thousands of ordinary people who volunteer in some small way to make our world better.

When times are tough, heroes emerge. When the pandemic was at its worst in New Jersey, Forrest ran a campaign in his hometown of Wood-Ridge to deliver meals and desserts to feed the medical staff at Hackensack Meridian Health Hospital. This is the main campus in Hackensack, which was incredibly hard hit by coronavirus patients. Forrest and the Rotary did this for weeks, and supplied more than 800 meals to the staff at Hackensack during the worst weeks of the pandemic.

Forrest also does letter-writing campaigns to soldiers serving overseas and collects diapers for families of veterans and those who serve in our armed forces, he also shared with us his involvements with the charity (Help Bring a Soldier Home for Christmas)

The organization’s charity drive–spearheaded by Forrest Elliott-raises money to pay for airline tickets to bring members of the military home for the holidays. Last year, the 5013c organization was able assist five marines.
“On the organization Facebook page: Money collected will be used to buy round trip airline tickets for the soldiers. We have extended the fundraiser until December 5th.”

Many Soldiers, Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Coast Guardsmen are unable to go home for the holidays each year. They might have the time, but not the money to do so. This organization help Bringing military families together for the holidays.

"Forrest is a very giving, caring person and a great Rotarian."
We all should be very proud of Forrest for the things he does for his club, outside the club in his town and other areas, and especially his work with veterans. Thank you for comming.

* Lois Horowitz shared an article about a Paterson woman with polio who is working to walk again, one manicure at a time
Mariluz Paulino was a toddler taking her first steps when polio left her unable to walk. Her family was too poor to afford a wheelchair, so as a young child she used her arms to drag herself along the floor of her home in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, her daughter said. But her disability didn’t stop her from getting an education. Paulino learned to walk with leg braces and crutches, became her college’s valedictorian with a degree in computer engineering, got married, gave birth to three children, immigrated to the United States and eventually found herself unable to walk again after she fell on the ice outside her Paterson home and shattered her knee and broke her femur.

Now Paulino needs a wheelchair to get around and performs manicures and pedicures in one of the bedrooms of the 4th Ward apartment she shares with Guzman, her oldest daughter. Paulino said she sees about 20 clients a week and has been setting aside some of the money she makes to buy new leg braces and boots and to pay for the treatment she needs to walk again.

Paulino's orthopedist told her it would cost about $20,000 to get everything she needs to resume walking. She doesn’t have health insurance and received treatment through charity care when she fell on the ice in 2009. Paulino was working two jobs in information technology in the Dominican Republic when her husband decided the family would come to the United States in 2003. But Paulino’s visa status would not allow her to work in computer technology. So, she worked the manicures and pedicures.

After Paulino suffered her fall in 2009, her husband had problems with his immigration status and was sent back to the Dominican Republic in 2011. The couple eventually divorced as Paulino struggled to get by with three children. But Paulino made sure her children stayed focused on their educations. In the apartment room where she now does people’s nails sits a framed certificate identifying Paulino as Eastside High School’s parent of the year for 2012-13.
“Her life has been very difficult, but not impossible,” And with the HELPING HANDS from someone like Lois Horowitz from the Paramus Rotary Club, things will be okay.
Lois is on a mission to reach a bigger goal to help Paulina.

In the future it should be the responsibility of each president to send a representative to the Foundation meetings from his or her club. Also, always invite all new members to attend.

Governor John Susani want to invite all Club Presidents and Membership Chairs, AGs, (assistant governors) any other interested Rotarian to attend the Membership seminar on

Published on the Governor’s Newsletter:
Paramus Rotary Honored for COVID-19 Work. In its Evening of Hope virtual event on Sept. 29, the Center for Hope and Safety in Paramus honored the Paramus Rotary Club for its assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic with the following statement: The Paramus Rotary Club has supported Center for Hope and Safety for decades. Most recently, the group of 68 members came to the aid of CHS during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, springing into action to respond to the urgent needs of the organization. Led by President Dawn Feorenzo, who also reached out to the Paramus Moms Facebook Page, the club filled a garage and several vans with food and PPE supplies to benefit CHS. Thanks to the efforts of Paramus Rotary, CHS also received a freezer to stockpile food for the Safe House, our emergency shelter for victims of domestic violence. Thank you, Paramus Rotary, for your generous donations, for spending hours shopping for food, for lugging endless bags of groceries to our Community Center, for donating clothes to children in need and for always showing a strong caring spirit. Deeply grateful for your work and tireless dedication, we are pleased to recognize the Paramus Rotary Club with the 2021 CHS Benefactor Award

**Center for Hope and Safety’s Virtual Awards Dinner, Evening of Hope, will take place on Wednesday, November 3rd at 7 p.m. The Paramus Rotary Club is the recipient of the Benefactor Award.  The event will be free to watch, although donations are encouraged. You can register now to ensure you receive all the info about the event, including information about the silent auction, which will open mid-day on Monday, here:
