Spring is official in 6 days! Hang in there Rotarians. Hopefully the warmer weather will bring out more members to the weekly meetings. This past week we had 29 members for lunch. Thank you to Peter Kantzilieris and Fred Rohdieck for filling in for me in my absence. I am happy to be back.
Our next board meeting is set for Monday, March 18 @ Bacari Grill for 6:30. Please join us.
March 8th celebrated "International Woman's Day". It's a day about empowering others and creating balance. Balance is not a women's issue, it's a business issue. Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. Balance drives a better working world. Let's all help create a #BalanceforBetter.
Become A Volunteer Mentor - Jean Dunn, Children's Aid and Family Services
The goal of mentoring is to help the children (ages 12-19) develop life skills so they are prepared for independent living. Mentors spend 2 hours every other week with an adolescent, giving them the opportunity to try new experiences while learning life skills for the future. An example - going out to dinner, learner to order, speaking respectfully to the server and calculating the tip.
A successful mentor must be: at least 25 years old, a consistent presence in a child's life, and a positive role model.
Comprehensive training is given to prepare you for your role. You will have a support group to ask questions. Stipend available to help fund activities and complimentary tickets for sporting events and shows are given when available.
Share your positive upbringing with another person who needs it.
The center is located at 22-08 Rt. 208 South, Fairlawn.
James Beck stopped in to give us an update. He is a recipient of a four year Laganella Scholarship. He is currently a senior at Northeastern College. The scholarship has helped pay for his tuition, resources, textbooks and allowing him to live on campus. He has interned with Wellington Mgmt. Company in Boston. James currently has an interview set up with Alpha Sites in NYC so we wish him good luck! James left us by saying..."The best version of myself is when I can give back." I think that is the making of a great Rotarian someday!
James and his mom, Andrea came from the Philippines. James had his first surgery here back in 2004 when he was 2. He is back for his 2nd surgery to repair a problem he was having. After hearing of the hurdles they have to go through to travel here, President Diane and the rest of the Rotarians collected $750 in Happy Dollars to donate to James and his Mom. We wish you a speedy recovery and a safe trip back home.
