Past President Nick Laganella introduced Sophie Stone who returned recently from Myanmar. Gift of Life had gone for a mission in 2015 to Wakena hospital. The water
situation in the area was very bad. The water was coming from murky ponds and rivers nearby that was not treated properly. Clean water is also very expensive in the area. To put things in perspective the daily wage in the area is $3-$4 a day, meanwhile 5 bottle of water go for $1! This is a luxury that cannot be afforded by many and therefore the population settles for the still pond water that is free.
Sophie recently went on this mission in Myanmar in conjunction with the Wakema association and a couple different Rotaries in order to figure out who is the best candidate to receive new water towers. They looked at population, need for water, interest in the project, and location in order to figure out which village will be the new village to receive this new water tower. Also, they need to make sure that the land the water tower is on is donated in order to avoid disputes over ownership of the water tower down the road. Once the water town is built, it will be a community asset as opposed to being privately owned. Once all this information is collected, it will be reviewed by the committee and a decision about time and location of the project will be made.
There will be a Myanmar Mission Fundraiser at Trinity Church located at 650 Pascack Rd. Paramus NJ 07652 on September 23, 2017 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm to help raise money to fund the next water tower project.
Our current Gift of Life recipient was also present at the meeting as she was getting ready for her upcoming surgery and she was given a Mini in order to keep her company through her recovery!
