Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday September 7, 2017

Paramus Rotary Club Meeting of Thursday, September 7, 2017

This week we had a presentation by Gerry O'Connor who is the Executive Director of Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC). He was introduced by our Vice President Fred Rohdieck.

The Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) was founded in 1983 by Archbishop Emeritus Peter L. Gerety as the Fund for Educational Advancement.  SFIC is a non-profit organization funded by corporations, foundations and individual donors who wish to invest in the future of economically disadvantaged children living in neighboring communities.  The Fund has made an impact on the lives of thousands of inner-city children.  Under the direction of the Board of Trustees and the Executive Director,  SFIC has been able to provide over 50,000 students with over $39,000,000 in partial tuition scholarships. Its mission is to provide children in need with the opportunity fora quality, values-based education in a safe environment. The Fund provides partial tuition scholarships to economically disadvantaged children attending private and parochial school with Bergen, Essex, Hudson, and Union Counties. Scholarship awards are based upon need without regard to race, religion, or ethnicity.

In 1999, a partnership was created with the Children’s Scholarship Fund (CSF), a national non-profit organization, which increased the number of scholarships SFIC has been able to provide significantly.  With matching funds provided by CSF, scholarship programs expanded in Newark, Jersey City and Elizabeth with dramatic results. The Fund is looking for people to be Angels! What is an Angel you ask?

An Angel helps provide a value based education to students attending a private or parochial school in the Archdiocese of Newark. Starting at $1000 per year, an Angel will have an immediate impact, not only on individual students, but also on the schools they attend. Partial Tuition Scholarships provide low income families access to a private school education that they could otherwise not afford. Angles will receive cards, notes and drawings from students they assist. Angels also have the opportunity to meet students at an Annual Angel's Reception.

There will be a benefit concert for Inner-City education. This will be held on Oct 27th 2017 at Kean University in Union NJ!
