Governor Jim Boryer came to visit the Paramus Rotary as part of his tour around all the different clubs in the district. He came to talk to us about how he can help our club grow. Service Above Self is a Rotary motto and service is great but we need to let others know what we do as well. He posed a few questions and then proceeded to answer them.
How can Rotary add value to your volunteer spirits?
This can be done with training at seminars and workshops such as the leadership conferences. One can visit other clubs to meet other like minded people and also see what others are doing. Another great way is to talk to young professionals. He has been in Rotary for a while now and he has noticed that Rotary is changing, especially the last 5 years. Rotary was started by a young Lawyer, Paul Harris, who wanted to make connections with his community. The few who joined rotated offices for new location and that is how we got our name, Rotary!
Governor Boryer remembers when Peter Wells was president and he talked about the Little Black Book since you could (and used!) get fined for talking about business at a meeting. Governor Jim Boryer wants to change that and go back to the basics of our roots in order to help young professionals come in and be a part of Rotary. Young professionals are always looking to talk to the "Movers and Shakers" of the community for mentorship. The established Rotarians can also offer their expertise to help the younger professionals in the community. Why not give Service to such a great organization and also be able to get something out of your membership as well, he asked.
There are so many Resources within the club. He states that there are so many fellowships and committees where anyone's interest can be fulfilled. He discussed about different groups that exist such as a Get Fit program, a young business professionals social, and even a Yoga group. The best way to support is to support local business and fellow members and keep everything in the family!
Governor Jim Boryer commended our club for having over 70 members and over 50 committees! This shows how active our club is and how it should be easy to attract new members due to the diversity of projects. In this way it also shows that we do a lot for our community, locally and internationally, while appealing to many people's passions and interests.
30 Years of Women in Rotary!!!
We are celebrating 30 years of Women in Rotary. Governor Boryer, along with everyone else is excited about this. There have been many strong Women throughout the club as well as internationally that have led strongly. We all can't imagine Rotary without women today!
His district conference this year will be the first multi-district conference ever. We are teaming with District 7255 and going to Punta Cana! As always Rotary helps with local projects so there will be a local Gift of Life project as well as 2 educational projects at local schools. The Rotarians attending will get to enjoy a great conference while also helping out which is what we do best!
In closing he spoke about a recent project he attended in Japan after the recent earthquake and tsunami that they had. When all the different presidents met everyone was silent. This was changed by one president who stepped up and spoke about his wife's experience while standing on the roof alone talking to him (he away on business) and not knowing if she will make it. Thankfully she did, but this got everyone else talking and by the end of the meeting everyone was sharing stories and hugging goodbye with tears of joy. It can be seen here that Rotary truly brings people together!
